Duplex sonography is a non-invasive procedure which permits the determination of flow velocity and direction in visceral vessels. Results in 50 normals have shown that small arteries can be evaluated in about 50% of cases. The portal venous system can be demonstrated in all cases; average flow velocity and volume is 15.2 +/- 2.8 cm/s and 694 +/- 230 ml/min, corresponding with the values obtained by invasive methods. Clinical application for duplex examinations can be found in portal hypertension, varices, thromboses, aneurysms and transplant kidneys.

Sequential contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiencies

The purpose of the present study was to assess the presence and the time-course of contrast-enhancement in the pituitary gland and pituitary stalk of 24 patients with isolated growth hormone (GH) deficiency and multiple pituitary hormone deficiency. The patients were evaluated clinically (auxological measurements), endocrinologically (spontaneous GH secretion and GH stimulation tests) and with conventional MRI scans. Short- and long-term effects of the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt on portal vein thrombosis in patients with cirrhosis

Background and aims Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) negatively impacts the prognosis in patients with cirrhosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement in patients with cirrhosis complicated by PVT. Methods Seventy consecutive cirrhotic patients with non-tumoural PVT treated with TIPS for portal hypertension complications from January 2003 to February 2010 in a tertiary-care centre were followed until last clinical evaluation, liver transplantation, or death. Abnormalities of the umbilico-portal venous system in Down syndrome: A report of two new patients

Congenital anomalies of the umbilical and portal venous system are rare vascular malformations which are often associated with anomalies of the heart and gastrointestinal tract. Association with chromosomal disorders has been sporadically reported. We now report on two patients with trisomy 21 and congenital anomalies of the umbilico-portal system.
